March 12th, 2010Moday! – Winner and Loser- AVG vs. Avast!
March 8th, 2010Wow, never before has it been more apparent the need for a decent web-shield. Even the big boys like Google are susceptible to drive by dns attacks. This link, from my computer and my adsense account.
I am a silver level reseller of AVG, however more often than not they are losing my favor. AVG let me access the site, Avast threw a flag on the play.
For business I still use and sell AVG, their remote installation and maintenance makes things easy for clients and myself. I think AVG would have caught it sooner than later, but AVAST is first. Thats why for home use or business Avast wins!

Wednesday – Tech Item Spotlight
March 3rd, 2010An item for geeks to lust over.
64GB Crucial M225 2.5″ Solid-State Drive
- Multi-Level Cell (MLC) NAND Flash Memory
- Serial ATA 3.0Gb/s (SATA)
- 64MB DRAM cache
For testing I used an Asus M3A78-CM, with a AMD phenom 9950 Quad with 6gb of memory. The bottleneck is definitely the drive. Running ABGX360 on a ISO of a game I own.
Actual performance:
Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache
64GB Crucial M225 SSD
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1500gb drive
This may seem a bit unsettling, the SSD is only ~20mb/s faster than a much larger drive. However it really shines on boot up and random access. This is definitely a technology to embrace and watch.
EDIT: I also used HDTUNE Pro.

Moday! – Winner and Loser
March 1st, 2010Every Monday I will post a winner and a loser. There are a ton of them. Should be easy.
This weeks winner is Input Director, I had previously used Synergy but it lacks win7 compatibility. So the loser is Synergy.
Synergy – “Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It’s intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).”
- Multi-OS
Input Director – “Input Director is a Windows application that lets you control multiple Windows systems using the keyboard/mouse attached to one computer. It is designed for folks who have two (or more) computers set up at home and find themselves regularly sliding from one system to the other (and wearing out the carpet in the process!). With Input Director, you can share a single keyboard/mouse across a set of systems. You switch which system receives the input either by hotkey or by moving the cursor so that it transitions from one screen to the other (in a very similar fashion to a multi-monitor setup). The idea being that you can position the monitors from two or more systems in a row and use a shared keyboard/mouse to control all of them.”
- ID allows you to change slave and master on the fly
- Allow only specific IP’s
- easy to use gui
- errors are spelled out
- They kept it simple, stupid
So for me the winner is Input director, pure and simple. If you use other operating systems synergy is for you. I am happy just using VNC with them.

The pizaz of piracy.
July 31st, 2009It always amazes me how much work goes into cracks. Take for instance the windows7loader.

Not only is it timely, it’s a thing of beauty.
This is not just something extra some of these crackers do, they all do this. You can’t find a patch that doesn’t play music. Most of it synth or computer generated. Some even throw in old video game music.
This isn’t just a competition of looks or sounds. They do all of this work efficiently, using small files. Mere kilobytes!
An anonymous hacker had this to say ” it is a competition all the way around best hack, fastest hack, best UI, best music, smallest crack application size” he finished with “everything is about rep”
It is an interesting world in which we live. People are acting out creatively for no profit. This is truly an art form
Office 2010 Leaked!
July 13th, 2009
http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/07/leaked-newer-office-2010-technical-preview-build.ars
“Office 2010 build 14.0.4302.1000 has leaked into the wild, so it looks like there’s more happening today than just build 7600 of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Office 2010 will be available in 32-bit and 64-bit (possibly on one DVD); both flavors have been leaked.”
